Dr. Woods to throw ‘first pass’ at Chiefs’ home opener Sunday

As if the buzz of “Red Friday” and the excitement of the Kansas City Chiefs home opener on Sunday isn’t enough, the Children’s Mercy family has the additional pride of our very own Dr. Gerald Woods being selected to throw the official first pass of the game!

Dr. Woods, Division Director, Division of Hematology/Oncology/BMT and Director of the Sickle Cell Program, was chosen as a “Chiefs Kingdom Champion,” a program that recognizes outstanding individuals who make our community a better place to live, work and play. Sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City, “Blue KC Chiefs Kingdom Champions” are selected from nominations submitted by Chiefs fans.

Dr. Woods will be recognized during pregame activities and will throw the official first pass of the home opening game to a former Chiefs player or celebrity. If you’re attending the game be sure to arrive in time for the pre-game festivities and cheer on Dr. Woods.

Dr. Woods also was interviewed on radio station KCFX 101 about his work at CM and his involvement with Camp Courage, where kids and families learn to manage Sickle Cell Disease. Click here to listen to his interview.
