Handwashing: 5 Simple Steps to Keep you Germ-Free

Handwashing is like a “do-it-yourself” vaccine that stops the spread of germs. In fact, regular handwashing, is one of the best ways to keep from getting sick. Here are the five simple and effective handwashing steps:

  1. Wet hands with water.

  2. Lather with soap and make sure to cover the entire surface of your hands.

  3. Scrub the entire surface of your hands and don’t forget your fingertips and nails.

  4. Rinse hands with water.

  5. Dry hands thoroughly with a single-use towel. (Use towel to turn off faucet.)

Throughout the day, you touch numerous items that are common carriers of germs. Always remember to wash your hands:

  • Before and after eating

  • Before, during and after preparing food

  • After touching garbage

  • Before and after treating a cut or wound

  • After changing diapers

  • Before and after caring for someone who is sick

  • After using the bathroom or helping someone use the bathroom

  • After blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing

  • After touching animals or after touching their food, treats or toys

You should also consider washing or sanitizing your hands after using or touching any of the following items:

  • Purses and wallets, as well as the contents inside, which includes money and charge cards

  • Cell phones

  • Tablets, iPads and music players

  • Game system controllers

  • Computers and laptops
