KMBZ: Doctors report alarming increase in childhood liver disease

A new study says doctors should be testing for fatty liver disease in children as young as eight years old.

Largely because of the rise in obesity, fatty liver disease is the most common chronic liver condition in children and adolescents, doctors say.

Dr. Ryan Fischer at Children's Mercy is seeing more children with dangerously high liver enzymes, called ALTs.

"Not only are we seeing more kids who have these elevations in their ALTs, suggesting stress on their liver, but now we're seeing more kids with very elevated, severely elevated, ALTs, what we would say is ten times the upper limit of normal," Fischer said.
