Children’s Mercy Announces Exclusive License Agreement to Advance Innovative Therapy for Dystonia and Parkinson’s Disease
Children’s Mercy is proud to announce a groundbreaking achievement in its commitment to advancing medical innovation. The nationally recognized, independent pediatric health system has executed an exclusive license agreement with Vima Therapeutics, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based biotechnology company, to commercialize VIM0423, a first-in-class oral therapeutic in development for people living with dystonia and Parkinson’s disease.

Dystonia affects up to one million people in the U.S., causing painful, involuntary muscle contractions that severely impact quality of life. No existing treatments address the root cause of the disease, and the current standard of care is often ineffective and carries a significant risk of side effects.
VIM0423 is designed to selectively target muscarinic cholinergic receptors in the brain. Targeting these receptors is a proven mechanism in movement disorders, but current approaches are limited by central and peripheral tolerability issues. VIM0423 has been designed to maximize both efficacy and tolerability to deliver effective therapy for all dystonia patients.
“This research represents a breakthrough in how we approach movement disorders,” said Rose Gelineau-Morel, MD, Division of Neurology, who leads the research team at Children’s Mercy driving this discovery. “By developing therapeutics for these movement disorders, we have the potential to transform the standard of care—improving treatment efficacy and reducing side effects for patients who need better options.”
VIM0423 has been granted Fast Track designation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of isolated dystonia and is currently being evaluated in a Phase 2 clinical trial.
The license agreement highlights the rapid evolution of Children’s Mercy’s technology transfer program, which has grown from concept to impact in just a few short years.

Vima Therapeutics has an exclusive license from Children’s Mercy to develop and commercialize VIM0423 worldwide, while Children’s Mercy continues to champion discoveries that make a difference for families in Kansas City and beyond.

Establishing the safety and efficacy of the product in adults is an important first step for subsequent investigations in children. Research exploring use in pediatric dystonia has received funding from Children’s Mercy Research Partners, an innovative group of donors that come together to hear from select researchers and collectively award funding to advance breakthrough pediatric innovation. In the first five years of the program, Mercy Research Partners contributed more than $2.29 million to support 19 research projects and nine patent applications at Children’s Mercy.
