Children's Mercy Board Chairman receives Missouri Hospital Association award

John "Jack" Ovel, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Children's Mercy, is a recipient of the 2014 Excellence in Governance award from the Missouri Hospital Association (MHA) for his contributions to the health-care community.

Jack was first elected to the Children's Mercy Central Governing Board in 1996 and served for two years before business took him out of the Kansas City area. When he returned to the area, he was elected to the Board of Directors in 2007.

"Despite a demanding career as a bank president and regional vice chair of a wealth management company, Jack has traveled to Washington to represent the voice of our community in its support for Children's Mercy," said Randall L. O'Donnell, PhD, President and CEO. "He has journeyed with our Philanthropy team to learn, and later to teach, the importance of philanthropy to our mission of improving the health and well-being of all children, regardless of their families' ability to pay. Jack is a trusted confidant and advisor to me as well as to other Board members and hospital executives."

Herb B. Kuhn, MHA President and CEO, said, "Engaged trustees help support strong, locally focused hospitals. It is our honor to recognize these dedicated community leaders with MHA's Excellence in Governance Award for their service to the community and hospital."

The MHA represents 153 Missouri hospitals.
