Eating gluten free a must for family of girl with Celiac disease

7 year-old from Joplin had to stay out of school for a time

Cydney Butler battles Celiac Disease, an immune reaction to gluten that damages her small intestine.

"In a gluten free diet we ask families to avoid three main grains which are wheat, barley and rye," said Dr. Julia Bracken, a pediatric gastroenterologist at Children's Mercy.

And just because the label or menu says gluten free, you have to be a detective.

"If you are at a restaurant that serves french fries and those are made of potatoes, but if they are fried where the chicken strips were they are no longer gluten free," said Cydney's mom Crystal.
