Fox 4: Children's Mercy Kansas welcomes new facility dog
Facility dogs
By Kerri Stowell
Children’s Mercy Kansas is introducing its newest staff member, a four-legged “dog-ter” named Benny.
Benny works with the pediatric care team to help bring joy to young patients battling illness.
He is a 2-year-old golden retriever mix. He works alongside a certified child life specialist to help patients cope with being in the hospital and the treatments they’re undergoing.
From participating in art projects and other bedside activities, to walking with patients, or simply sitting next to them in an exam room, Benny provides much needed emotional support.
Benny’s placement is thanks to the Dunkin Joy in Childhood Foundation, which helps place dogs at hospitals nationwide.
