Hidden Holiday Dangers

This time of year emergency departments sometimes see an increase in childhood injuries

Hidden holiday dangers are something Dr. Gregory Conners, with Children's Mercy Hospital, wants parents to be on the lookout for.

"Holiday time is fun, but it can be dangerous for children," Conners said.

For instance, those tiny button batteries found in things like musical cards. Conners said it's not uncommon for a child to place the batteries in their nose, ears or even ingest them. Conner said while many times the batteries will pass through the body without any trouble, if they become lodged in a child's throat it could cause severe burns within just two hours.

"There have been plenty of kids who've had major surgeries and months and months in the hospital and had life altering injuries," Conners said.
