KMBC 9: Children's Mercy works to distribute COVID-19 vaccine to educators

By Kelly Eckerman

Children's Mercy Hospital is expanding its role in the vaccination process. After vaccinating staff, it turned its focus to teachers, vaccinating 10,000 educators so far in Kansas. Soon those efforts will likely include Missouri teachers as well.

The hospital has played a critical role throughout the pandemic. Even though children haven't been a high-risk population for COVID-19, medical experts at Children's Mercy led the way with strategies to stop the spread of the virus within the hospital and inside schools. Now, it's working with county health departments to vaccinate educators, such as a recent clinic in Johnson County.

"We feel that it is important that there are many ways to meet the safety and well-being of our children and one of those key entities is through teachers, and child-care providers and so we felt it was very important to assist with these efforts in any way that we can across our region, " said Dr. Jennifer Watts, of Children's Mercy Hospital.

Children are not yet eligible for the vaccine, but the hospital will be involved in a clinical trial looking at the safety and efficacy in children.
