A new warning about social media and mental health in kids, the surgeon general says it's contributing to a youth mental health crisis.

He issued a 25-page advisory linking social media to conditions like depression, anxiety and low self-esteem.

More than a third say they use it almost constantly, and teens are likely to use their devices even more now that summer is beginning.

The U.S. surgeon general says social media has both positive and negative effects on young people but says there’s not enough research to know if it’s safe.

"We're really just trying to kind of figure out how to best navigate this," said Dr. Ram Chettiar, child and adolescent psychiatry doctor at Children’s Mercy.
