KMBC 9: Kansas City teenager goes home with new heart, despite challenges of COVID-19 outbreak

By Kelly Eckerman

A local teenager just went home with a new heart after a transplant at Children’s Mercy Hospital. A heart transplant during the COVID-19 pandemic presents more challenges, but this is a life-saving operation that couldn’t wait.

The 15-year-old has lived most of her life with a heart rhythm problem. She needed a transplant, and two weeks ago a donor heart became available.

Because of COVID-19, her transplant team did take extra precautions before heading into surgery. Lauren and her mom are excited about the future, but they must get through quarantine first.
