Managing back-to-school and diabetes

If your child has diabetes, local doctors say an action plan must be in place

Dr. Angela Turpin from Children's Mercy has been taking care of Grace Chisholm for quite a while.

"She does a great job."

Grace's mom Laura Chisholm has learned through the years that diabetes management at school varies.

"When Grace was in elementary school I had to take a much more active role. When getting back to school I would meet with the school nurse and her teachers and give them a medical plan."

As Grace got older, she was taught responsibility.

Dr. Turpin says it's important to empower your child at an early age because diabetes is a disease that they are going to have to manage and live with the rest of their lives.'
