Study suggests some pacifiers are putting infants and toddlers at risk

A study released by Kids In Danger (KID) suggests that some pacifiers may be putting infants and toddlers at risk. More than 11 pacifiers have been recalled since 2010, according to KID. The pacifiers failed to meet safety standards, primarily because they would chip off and pose a hazard for choking.

Dr. Jessica Schnell, DO, with Children's Mercy Hospital, said that while they haven't had any incidents of children coming into the emergency room with injuries due to using a pacifier, there are things parents want to be on the look out for.

"You want to make sure that there aren't any cracks or wear and tear because pieces can fall off, especially on plastic pacifiers the little handle can break off, little pieces can chip off and get into their airway," Dr. Schnell said.
