Tips to get kids back on school sleep schedule

The first weeks back can be a struggle for students and parents

A new school year means saying so long to those late summer nights.

And the transition isn't easy.

Kevin Smith, a child psychologist at Children's Mercy Hospital, said sudden changes in sleep schedules can really take a toll.

"It sounds pretty simple, but look at their functioning during the day," he said.

Smith said little sleep leads not only to attention and behavior problems but health issues.

"Having a consistent bedtime routine, consistent bedtime and wake time and trying to keep that consistency on the weekends as well," Smith said.
